![]() It's less jarring, and it better suits our all-day, all-night screen consumption. Still, staring into a dark screen just feels better for some of us. It's not yet clear whether iOS 13 uses pure black, but Apple executives made no mention of battery savings when they announced the feature last week. Gmail's standard dark theme turns the background steel gray Slack's dark theme goes dark, but not quite black. ![]() It also won't save battery power if the dark mode design uses any color other than pure black as the background. But the main reason he sees designers going dark is simply, as he puts it, “because it is cool.” So if dark mode makes it slightly harder for us to read what's onscreen, and most people don't have a strong preference for it anyway, why do designers keep foisting it on us? Roman Banks, an app designer and developer who's worked on interfaces for platforms like WhatsApp, says darker themes can make certain designs pop or give users a way to customize their experience. The results of that (admittedly informal) survey showed that nearly half of respondents preferred blog designs that were “always light,” while only 10 percent preferred “always dark.” (The remaining respondents chose “depends on the blog,” or “I don’t care either way.”) In 2009, ProBlogger surveyed readers on this very question. It's not even clear that most people prefer dark mode as a purely aesthetic choice. Mayr calls it an “open research question.” ![]() It's possible that people with vision loss have an easier time reading web text on a black background-and indeed, dark mode is often billed as an accessibility feature-but the research hasn't been entirely conclusive. ( They don't.) For some people, dark mode themes with especially high contrast might even contribute to fatigue and strain. This seems to hold up even in populations like the elderly, which some researchers have hypothesized might benefit from negative polarity. 8/1/2023 0 Comments Test speed internet free![]() We will be most interested in the "dry" result, which we will achieve by testing a completely unloaded network. If you're not happy with your ISP's response, follow our guide on how to complain about your broadband speed. If your speed drops below this, your provider must improve it within a month – if it can't, it must allow you to exit your contract penalty-free. If your broadband contract started after March 2019 and you're with one of the providers that has signed Ofcom’s voluntary code of practice (BT, EE, Plusnet, TalkTalk, Utility Warehouse, Virgin Media and Zen Internet), your provider must give you a minimum guaranteed speed when you take out a new contract. Start by providing evidence of your internet speeds – it's a good idea to keep a diary of interruptions and to regularly use the speed checker tool to build up a true picture of your service. We suggest calling your internet service provider (ISP) as a first step to see what it can do. ![]() However, if you've done everything you can to speed up your connection and you're still getting a lower speed than you were promised, your broadband provider may be in breach of contract. If your speeds are significantly less than you expected, there are steps you can take to improve things – get started by checking our advice on Speed up slow broadband. What you can do if your broadband speeds are slow The results also only show the speeds you're getting on the device you're using for the test – the speed your provider is delivering to your home may be higher, especially if you're performing the test wirelessly at some distance from your router. To build an accurate picture, we would suggest you run several tests during a single week, in peak use time (between 8pm and 10pm) and during off-peak times. It's important to note that the speed test results only represent a snapshot of your broadband connection at the time of testing. However, if you use your broadband connection for video calls or online gaming, keep an eye on the upload rate, too, as it's essential for both. The upload speed shows the rate that data is transferred from your device to the internet – how quick it is to upload a photo or document to an email, for example.ĭownload speeds are usually of more interest, as most tasks require you to download information, for example searching online for information. The download speed shows the rate at which data is transferred from the internet to your device – how quick it is to access a newspaper article online or stream music, for example. This is needed for applications where timing is everything, such as interactive video games. More responsive connections are those with a low number of ms (meaning they take less time to respond).

A company's total cash assets will decline when a dividend is paid. Tip: It is important to remember that cash dividends represent assets leaving a company and going to its shareholders. For many investors, dividends can be a steady source of income, rivaling that of fixed income investments. Shareholders tend to place higher value in companies that pay dividends consistently and particularly favor those who increase their dividends over time. Some companies may reduce or even suspend their dividends during periods when profits are low, as was the case during the Great Recession of 20. Most large-cap companies included in the S&P 500 index pay regular dividends.Ĭompanies that decide to pay dividends usually expect to continue the practice on an ongoing basis. Dividends are therefore most common among larger, more established companies that are generating sufficient profits to distribute some to shareholders. Young, growing companies typically don't pay dividends because they are focused on continually investing their profits back into the company. Do All Companies Pay Dividends?Ī substantial number of public companies pay dividends, though not all. If the record date for this dividend was on the same Tuesday, the investor would not be eligible to receive that dividend. Thus, investors who purchase shares of stock on a Monday don't actually become a shareholder of record until Wednesday. Any new purchases of the stock on the ex-dividend date (or later) will not qualify for receipt of the dividend. The Ex-Dividend date is normally 1 business day prior to the record date. Record Date: This is the market day on which the company will check their records to see who is eligible to receive the dividend.Įx-Dividend Date: Investors must purchase stock before the ex-dividend date to be eligible to receive the dividend. ![]() A liability then appears on the company's balance sheet. The following dates define the dividend process.ĭeclaration Date: This is the date an upcoming dividend payment is announced. ![]() Understanding Cash DividendsĬash dividends paid by public companies abide by a process stipulated by regulatory organizations. Some preferred dividends are floating rate, however.įactoid: The first dividends were offered by the storied Dutch East India Company which, between the years 16, paid an annual dividend of approximately 18 percent of the value of its shares. The main difference is that preferred dividends are often fixed at a rate stipulated in the security's prospectus. Preferred shareholders also receive cash dividends in the same manner as common shareholders do. Although it is much less common, investors who hold shares directly, and not through an investment account, may be issued paper cheques for the dividend amount they are entitled to. At any time, a company can declare a special dividend to reflect a non-recurring distribution, such as proceeds from the sale of a major asset.Ĭash dividends are typically credited to investors' brokerage accounts where the stock holding resides. and Canada, quarterly dividends are common, while in Australia and Japan, semi-annual dividends are typical, and in Germany, annual dividends are the norm. There are however some great katanas being produced in modern times under the old forging methods that are actually functional. To buy one of these katanas from the ancient times you would have one heck of a time finding one, and even if you do, you’ll be paying $20,000+ for an authentic katana from hundreds of years ago and the use beyond it being a wall hanger or museum piece now is practically nothing. I’ve browsed their site numerous times checking out all the ancient katana swords they have there and can’t wait for the day I actually get to go there in person. This place is probably number 1 on my bucket list. If anyone ever wants to see a ton of actual authentic katanas they need to check out the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo Japan. Whether it be to avenge a loved one’s death or to overthrow a dictator’s oppression on their people, these blades were meant for purposes beyond being a wall hanger or back yard cutter. ![]() In ancient Japanese times these blades were forged with the utmost dedication and meant to be a life long companion to any Samurai. Sword from the Edo period in the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo I believe these are best not because of their durability, which actually in some cases at the time was inferior to modern katanas, but because they were the foundation forges to many great swords in production today and their purpose of being produced in that time was for much greater causes than those forged today. The best katana in my mind are the ones made hundreds of years ago, the Nihonto ( 日本刀, nihontō) blades, which means a ‘Japanese sword made in Japan by a Japanese swordsmith under the original forging methods’. |
